As I stepped out of my front door this morning, one thing hit me - the cold. Bearing in mind that weather forecasters have said this going to be our coldest winter since you could walk from Britain to France, I thought it wise to purchase a coat.
We waited until mid afternoon before going to some local shops. Considering it was 3.00 pm when we set out, I naively thought that it would just be me and some other poor souls at the shop; how wrong I was...
The first realisation (which proved my theory about as mad as the French 'scientists' of the 16th century who reasoned the wind was caused by tree's movement) was the tailback that started a few metres from the end of my drive. Several hours later, and after ramming a mother and toddlers for her parking space, we were ready to get out and shop. (Note: I don’t normally enjoy shopping – and here’s why…) The instant I stepped outside the car, a large mass of people swarmed all around me. For god’s sake! This is a Sunday, go home and read the paper, wash the car, or whatever else people are meant to do. I have to say the people there didn’t look a particularly educated bunch, perhaps it was just the place, but I can see in retrospect why this type wouldn’t read a paper, or anything for that matter. They only had one thing on there mind: the next trivial item on their shopping list. Considering Britons total consumer debt is one trillion, this is quite alarming. Consequentially, walking around the shops I felt slightly nauseous – the whole hypermarket mentality sickens me; the idea of "pile ‘em high, sell ‘em cheap" disgusts me – especially after my trip to the dump on Saturday, where I saw the mounds of rubbish we as a society produce. I never thought I would say this, but I would consider voting Green. I think everyone should be made to see a rubbish dump or a landfill; it would make us realise where we’re currently heading – ruin.
Anyway, I didn’t get a coat in the end. The shops were too full of people lusting after items they could get on special offer that they didn’t need anyway. As a result, my time was wasted and the trip had pointlessly added to the congestion on the road. Oh well, that’s life in the 21st century I guess.
